Dr. Dee's first solo piano work, "ten-eight", a classical single movement composition, is so named for its meter. Although the meter changes several times within the piece, the principle theme which opens the piece is in 10/8. Then Diane White, she composed the piece in 1988 in the early part of her Master's degree in composition at University of California Santa Barbara while studying with composition professor Emma Lou Diemer. It is worth noting that the work's genesis precedes her time at UCSB. She actually created the first few measures during her undergrad composition studies at Washington University as a result of an assignment to write something in an "odd meter." The first 3 notes create a tri-chord upon which the entire work is built.
The composer herself performs the work in the live performance in 1992. The first of two doctoral recitals, it took place at UCSB's Lotte Lehmann Hall.
